Local engineers who know Portsmouth homes
R-Gas is based in Southsea, and most of our working day is spent in PO postcodes. That matters for the kind of faults we see. A lot of Portsmouth’s housing is Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many split into flats, with combi boilers squeezed into kitchens, cupboards and lofts. Long external condensate pipes are common on these properties. In a cold snap they freeze, and the boiler locks out with a fault code even though nothing is actually broken.
Like the rest of south Hampshire, Portsmouth has hard water. Limescale builds up in combi boilers, especially in the plate heat exchanger that heats your hot water. Typical signs are hot water that runs hot and cold, takes a long time to warm up, or a boiler that is noisy when the hot tap is on.
Larger and newer homes often have a system boiler with an unvented hot water cylinder instead of a combi. We service and repair those too: see unvented cylinder repair.
Boiler problems we fix
- No heating, no hot water, or both
- Boiler showing a fault code or locking out
- Pressure keeps dropping, or the boiler is leaking
- Boiler noisy, banging or cutting out
- Radiators cold, or only warm at the top or bottom
- Frozen condensate pipe in cold weather
- Thermostat, programmer or valve faults
We work on the common makes, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Glow-worm, Viessmann and Potterton. Gas work is only carried out within each engineer's Gas Safe categories.
Seeing a fault code? Our boiler fault code guides explain what the common codes mean and the safe checks you can do first.
Frozen condensate pipe? If the boiler locks out in freezing weather and there is a plastic pipe running outside to a drain, it may be frozen. Pour warm (not boiling) water along the outside section, then reset the boiler. If that does not work, call us.
What happens when you book
- Call or send an enquiry
Tell us the boiler make, any fault code and your postcode. We confirm the attendance price and the next available appointment.
- The engineer finds the cause
Our engineer diagnoses the problem and explains what is wrong, what it will take to fix and what it will cost.
- You decide, then we fix it
Nothing extra happens without your agreement. Many repairs are finished on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take.
What to have ready when you call
Your postcode, the boiler make and model if you know it, any fault code or flashing light, whether you have heating, hot water or neither, and when it started. A photo of the boiler display helps. Please do not take the boiler casing off.

Portsmouth boiler repair questions
How much is a boiler repair?
Our diagnostic visit is £144 including VAT (£120 + VAT). It covers the engineer coming to you and up to the first hour. Once we know the cause, we price the repair and any parts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
Will you fix it on the first visit?
Often, yes. Our vans carry common parts. If your boiler needs a specific part, we tell you the cost and how soon we can get it before you agree to anything.
Is it worth repairing an old boiler?
Sometimes it is not. If the repair cost is high compared with the boiler’s age and condition, we will say so and can give you a separate replacement quote. We never push a new boiler when a repair makes sense.
Do you cover all of Portsmouth?
Yes. Use the postcode checker on our homepage or call us with your postcode and we will confirm the next appointment.
What if I smell gas?
Leave the property, do not use switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. They make the situation safe free of charge. We can then repair the appliance.
